Our picks at a glance

For most people, the best portable blender is the Ninja Blast: it is one of the more powerful cordless blenders, handles frozen fruit better than most and has a lid you can drink from. The BlendJet 2 is smaller and lighter, which suits a gym bag or a desk. The NutriBullet Portable is a simple, well-made option from a brand that knows single-serve blending.

Be realistic about what a portable blender is for. It makes a quick shake or a soft fruit smoothie anywhere you have a charged battery. It will not do the job of a full-size blender with ice, kale and nuts; for that, see our guide to the best blenders for smoothies.

What a portable blender does well

  • Protein shakes and soft smoothies. Banana, yoghurt, milk, soft or slightly thawed fruit and powders blend well.
  • Blending fresh, not ahead. You can carry the ingredients and blend just before you drink, so the smoothie does not separate in the bag.
  • Small kitchens and travel. It charges by USB, fits a drawer and works in a hotel room.

It struggles with large ice cubes, hard frozen chunks, fibrous greens and very thick mixtures. Liquid first and small pieces help a lot.

What to look for

  • Power and blade design. More power and a well-shaped blade handle frozen fruit better. Small motors spin the fruit around without breaking it down.
  • Capacity. Most hold around one serving. A bigger jar is useful if you add ice or want a larger drink, but it is heavier to carry.
  • Lid and spout. A leak-proof lid with a drinking spout and a carry loop means you do not need a second bottle.
  • Charging. USB-C charging is the most convenient. Check how many blends a charge gives in the maker's own figures.
  • Cleaning. Blending warm water with a drop of washing-up liquid cleans most of them. A jar that separates from the motor base is easier to wash properly.
  • Safety lock. Look for a lock or a sensor that stops the blade spinning unless the jar is on.

How we chose

We looked at power class, jar design, charging, cleaning, safety features and the reputation each model has built since launch. We have not run our own tests. Prices change often, so check before you buy.

Best overall: Ninja Blast Portable Blender

Around $60

The strongest all-rounder here. It blends a frozen berry smoothie or a protein shake in a cup you can drink from, and the jar comes off the motor for washing, which matters for something you use every day.

What we like

  • Handles frozen fruit better than most portable blenders
  • Leak-proof drinking lid with carry handle
  • Jar separates from the motor base for washing
  • USB-C charging

Keep in mind

  • Heavier and bulkier than the smallest models
  • Still not a match for a countertop blender with ice

Best compact: BlendJet 2 Portable Blender

Around $50

Good for shakes and soft smoothies at the gym or office. If your smoothies are mostly milk, banana and powder, it does the job in a very portable size. For frozen fruit, use smaller pieces and more liquid.

What we like

  • Light and small enough for a bag
  • Lots of colours
  • USB-C charging
  • Simple one-button use

Keep in mind

  • Smaller motor struggles with frozen chunks and ice
  • Jar does not detach from the base, so washing is by blending soapy water
  • Small capacity
  • Older units were part of a 2023 recall, so buy new from a trusted seller

Best simple option: NutriBullet Portable Blender

Around $50

A straightforward portable blender that does what it says. It suits shakes, soft fruit and quick breakfasts, and the drinking lid makes it a practical commuter bottle.

What we like

  • From a well-known single-serve blender brand
  • Leak-proof lid with carry loop
  • USB-C charging
  • Easy to use

Keep in mind

  • Modest power for frozen fruit
  • Single-serve size only

How to get a smoother smoothie in a portable blender

  1. Pour in the liquid first, up to the line, then soft fruit, then frozen pieces on top.
  2. Use small frozen pieces, or let frozen fruit sit for five minutes before blending.
  3. Blend in two or three short cycles and shake between them if things get stuck.
  4. Rinse straight away, or blend warm water with a drop of washing-up liquid.

Questions people ask

Can a portable blender crush ice?

Most can handle a few small cubes in plenty of liquid, but large or many ice cubes strain the motor. Use frozen fruit or chilled milk to get a cold drink instead.

Are portable blenders safe?

Reputable models have safety features that stop the blade unless the jar is fitted correctly. Follow the charging and cleaning instructions and do not run them empty. Check for official recalls on any model you own.

Is a portable blender worth it?

It is worth it if you make a shake or smoothie away from home most days. If you only blend at home, a single-serve countertop blender gives smoother results for a similar price. For carrying water the rest of the day, see our water bottle guide.
